IRIS has received a $500,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to study the effects of COVID-19 on university-based scientific research.

IRIS collects administrative data on research spending and employment from member institutions that account for approximately 40 percent of total U.S. university research and development expenditures. A preliminary analysis of these data show that while universities have been able to retain large majorities of their research-funded employees, spending on goods and services related to research have fallen dramatically with the onset of the pandemic.

The support from the Sloan Foundation will allow IRIS to continue its work to understand the full impact of the pandemic on research operations at member universities, and to expand the number of universities included in the data analysis.
