From local purchases of research-related goods and services to the creation of a STEM-trained workforce, the effects of university-based research on local, regional and state economies are hard to overstate. Yet the impacts of research institutions can often be overlooked by legislators and other decision-makers when competing interests are at stake.
The Institute for Research on Innovation and Science (IRIS), a nonprofit consortium of leading research universities, is working to change that.
