IRIS welcomes new and returning members to our Board of Directors. Dr. Michael Zwick, the Senior Vice President for Research at Rutgers University, was elected for a three-year term; and incumbent board member Bethan Cantwell, the Assistant Provost for Institutional Research at Michigan State University, was re-elected after initially joining for a partial board term in 2023.
About Dr. Michael Zwick
Dr. Zwick is the institutional official of the Rutgers Human Subjects Protection and Animal Care program. He earned a B.S. from Cornell University in Biological Sciences, specializing in Genetics and Development, and a Ph.D. in Population Biology from the 3 Center for Population Biology at the University of California at Davis.
A former Professor of Human Genetics at Emory University, his research uses genetics principles to discover the causes of rare and common disorders, with research experience as an individual investigator, a member of large consortiums, and a research leader. In addition to his experience as a human geneticist, Dr. Zwick’s collaborative, team-based approach also comes from his 25 years of military service as a former surface warfare qualified officer in the United States Navy (Commander, O-5).
About Bethan Cantwell
Bethan Cantwell leads the Office of Institutional Research (IR) at Michigan State University, providing senior leaders with data-informed decision-making and policy support. IR’s mission is to proactively support leadership as the source of data integrity, reliable and timely analysis, and high-quality consultation. Prior to joining MSU in 2011, Dr. Cantwell worked for five years at the University of Arizona.
Outside of MSU Bethan also chairs the Big Ten Academic Alliance Institutional Research group, serves on the AAU Data Exchange Council, and recently completed a two-year appointment to the APLU’s Commission on Information, Measurement and Analysis (CIMA) Executive Committee. Bethan is the research university representative on a statewide committee chaired by the State of Michigan’s Budget Office. She holds an MA in Political Science from the University of Leeds (UK) and an MBA from the University of Arizona.
