Dataset Description

IRIS receives data from universities twice a year (in spring and fall). The 2024 dataset was timestamped at the end of December 2023, containing data from 45 IRIS participating universities. The earliest data coverage is fiscal year 2001, and the latest fiscal year 2024. The complete dataset includes 30 files organized into and three collections: 1) Core, 2) Auxiliary and 3) Linkage. 

The files in the core collection include university financial and personnel administrative data pertaining to direct cost sponsored project expenditures at each university during a given year. These data are drawn directly from sponsored projects, procurement, and human resource data systems on each IRIS university’s campus. This release of the dataset contains data on 580,000 funded awards worth $192 billion, payments to more than 1.2 million vendors totaling $35 billion, and wages to approximately 985,000 employees. Table 3 displays the growth of the research dataset. 

The auxiliary collection provides researchers with contextual information on institutions, sub-organization units where grants are administered, and demographic information about employees who are paid on sponsored projects. We expanded gender and ethnicity imputation methods, increasing the number of imputation outcomes and variables. Other new additions to the auxiliary collection, added in response to researcher requests, include lookup files containing vendor industry codes (North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and detailed public descriptions of federal programs that provide grants, loans, scholarships, and other types of assistance awards drawn from public data.

The linkage collection includes crosswalks between UMETRICS data and external datasets with UMETRICS unique award numbers and agency-assigned award id as linking assets in most linkage products. In addition to crosswalks, we provide federal award details (e.g., obligated amount of each award, award duration, project abstracts, etc.) collected from over a dozen different sources. In this release, we included award linkage at both award- and individual (Principal Investigator) levels with six federal agencies: DOE, DOD, NASA, NIH, and NSF.
